There is no doubt that the popularity of Airbnb and vacation rentals has skyrocketed over the years. This has us looking at cottages and income properties in a whole new light. With that in mind, we wanted to look at the best ways to style and design a part-time home. Whether you have your own vacation rental, cottage or income property, there is value in simple and functional design.
We are always on the lookout for inspiration, and found ourselves impressed by so many boutique hotels. Smaller hotels tend to be more design focused while still being functional and durable. Here are five easy-to-implement decorating tips that we pulled from boutique hotels and tricks any homeowner or vacation rental owner can use to truly ‘wow’ their guests.
Clean out the Clutter
Boutique hotel rooms pack a big design punch, but never feature “personal” items. Tuck away anything that is just being used to fill space, and limit your accessorizing to clean and well-thought-out items. We all have “clutter” lying around; coffee tables layered with magazines, knick-knacks on the fireplace, or bedside tables covered with our favourite books and memorabilia. Our best advice: use this spring to clean up the clutter. Showcase only beautiful, art-inspired finds that work well with the style of your space.
Add some Personality with Wallpaper
The easiest and most cost-effective way to add huge impact to a space is with wallpaper. Don’t worry, this isn’t your mother’s floral paper with matching border. Wallpaper today has come a long way; it can cross over any number of design styles and add big drama to even the smallest spaces. Most importantly, wallpaper is easier than ever to put up and take down. New papers are often pre-pasted and can be removed with a little warm water and TSP to clean your walls. Our best advice: when purchasing wallpaper, keep an eye out for papers that are washable, durable and breathable.
Embrace Your Space
Boutique hotels are often quite small in size, but feel unbelievably luxurious. Why is this? Furniture and fittings are often sized perfectly for the space. This often requires searching for the ideal vintage find or having a piece customized. If purchasing new furniture is not in the cards for you, try looking at your space with fresh eyes and get creative. Can your TV console be converted into bench seating? Can your bar cart be repurposed as a bedside table? Does your sofa work best against the wall you’ve got it on? Maximize the space you have and make it as functional as possible.
Find Inspiration in Layer and Textiles
It’s important to hone in on the character of your home. Ask yourself: Is it a lakeside retreat, an urban or cultural centre, culinary destination, or even a Zen escape? The character of your home should give you a clear design path for the fabrics and textiles inside it. Boutique hotels are great at catering to their audience, so pinpoint yours and choose the décor accordingly. The easiest way to add personality to a space is through textiles. Start small with throw pillows, toss cushions and table linens and build up to drapery, area rugs and even upholstered furniture.
